When selecting a contractor for a home renovation, be sure to find someone you trust. Perform interviews as if you were hiring a personal assistant. You will have to let this contractor into your home and work with them on a daily basis. It’s better to select one you trust from the beginning than to face personality clashes later.

Patch holes in drywall using mesh. First spread a layer of drywall mud into the hole and around its edges. Then press the patch into the mud so that it adheres evenly to the surface of the wall. Trowel the mud carefully over the patch, allow to dry, and then sand to smooth.

You can speed the drying of your drywall patch by using a hair blower! Any hair dryer will work as long as it is portable enough that you can direct the air flow from it over your patch. Keep the air temperature set to low and don’t try to dry the patch too quickly or it will crack.

Determine the changes you want to do prior to starting the renovation. Planning is essential if you want to complete your project in a timely manner while staying within your budget. Changing your plans or adding tasks in the middle of a project can easily increase your costs and time to completion. You will have happier contractors when you can tell them precisely what you want, also.

Put your used paint brushes and rollers in plastic and in the fridge! If you are going to continue using the same paint in the near future there is no reason to wash out your brushes and rollers. Just seal them in a plastic bag and put them in the refrigerator. They will be usable for weeks!

If you plan to lay new tile flooring, consider radiant heat tiles. This type of tile heats up with electricity. Luckily, it’s easy to install them yourself if you are able to follow instructions. Its a good upgrade to your project regardless of whether or not you have a contractor. These tiles will make a real difference in your bathroom and will help you save on heating.

Are there small holes and imperfections on your walls from hanging things? Use spackle. Buy the spackle at your local home improvement shop. Assuming the holes aren’t terribly large, it shouldn’t take much spackle. The smallest holes can be filled by applying spackle from the end of a bobby pin. Once it dries, use something rigid to smooth it over the hole. Add a coat of paint. This quick fix will make any small hole disappear in a single day.

As you can see, home improvement has the potential to do a lot of good in the aesthetics of your home as well as it’s market value. Making some wise investments may really pay off in the long run and make your home more energy efficient and valuable.
